the sword on the cover looks like excaliber, or the masamune.

what sword and axe do the sword and axe on the guide represent?

Is that floating island there supposed to be the Floating Fortrace?

Brian said:
(September 22, 2007 06:04)

That seems likely.

Those weapons look like they might shatter if you spoke too loudly. Also, what is that round thing near the Fortress? Some kinda robot?

Brian said:

Someone else just asked that the other day. Not sure what it is. UFO maybe. Old games were notorious for putting crap in the box art that had nothing to do with the game. See also http://archive.gamespy.com/top10/january03/covers/index4.shtml

Maybe it's 343 Guilty Spark, off on some quirky dimension-travelling adventures.

Man, I really need to play this game. D:

So if the island city is the floating fortress, what's the orb thing orbiting it? I thought that was the fortress.

Spatvark said:

I thought it was the airship ¬_¬

FF1 Addict said:

maybe that orb thing is the fortress's defence system. or may be it's a satalite.

i don't mean to be rude, but it does seem like a wonderful talent i have to point out the obvious. this site does have a walkthrough, along with anouther great site called eyesonff.com. heres a the web address for this sites walkthrough for the water orb section since you were talking about the mermaids: http://ffclassic.net/nes/walkthrough/8

That thing floating near the sky castle is the airship. The crystal ball is Mayota's Eye, and the weapons are probably the Excalubur and the Light Axe.

"The NES version is my favorite"

- Yes, NES version is very good, but MSX has more detail. I like both, because characters design/style is awesome... In the remakes they don’t look so cool.

sword is excalibur the masamune is a katana supposedly made by a japanese sword smith of the same name... yes I know I'm a nerd...

I always felt the weapons on the box represented the coral sword and the great axe.

What happened to the spell guide? I've started playing FF1 again (happens occasionally) and I'd like to make sure I'm not messing up my spells...

Awesome sight, by the way. :D Thanks for the great work!

Great, I've been at this site for years and I gotta say, your doing a great job, although I am startled by how I am STILL interested in this old game, well I'm just a huge retro game fan. And then there was Proffessor Snape!

Céladon said:

Incredible. After all these years, the game is still fun. Not only that, but it DESTROYS the other Final Fantasy games in terms of GRAPHICS, STORYLINE and PLOT-AWESOMENESS.

Perhaps I'm a little biased, but whatever. FF1 is great. So there.

I always thought the round thing was the planet, it just far away so it looks tiny. The "red" thing on that round thing, I always supposed it was the Volcano.

Solo red mage is the way to go. No question.

The sword and axe on the cover represent the short sword and hand axe, which are found in Pravoka, the first time both a sword and axe are seen together. The hand axe is the only axe I've found (aside from the one which casts HRM2) that has a white graphic, and if you look at the short sword graphic, it tapers down toward the handle, the only sword I know of which does that, is the short sword. Makes sense, considering that's the first real town you go to after the prologue, it signifies a beginning in the game. as well, they are on the cover of the guide, quite a bit too coincidental, if you ask me.

The ONLY thing I like about the PSX version more than the NES is that it's more accurately translated.

What's everybody's favourite party?
Also, what's your favourite party-member?

My Fav. Party: Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, Black Mage
My Fav. Party-Member: Black Belt/Master

Yeah, so the thread has become tl;dr
But, just a quick thought:

Why did it take them two and a half years to release the game in America? Did it really take that long to translate and region convert and whatever else they had to do? I feel like it may not have been the best idea, since the SNES was already out by this point (I'm pretty sure).

Maybe they spent two years arguing about what to censor.

BTW I made an error, it's Dragon Warrior, not Dragon Quest.

Giovanni said:
(April 13, 2008 16:35)

Most likely they didn't realize how well it would sell compared to Dragon Quest. At the time Dragon Quest was the most popular RPG series over in Japan. Once they realized how much of a hit FF was then they had to translate and everything. Originally I don't think they planned to release it in the U.S.

Everyone's placing way too much importance on the Box Art/ You must remember that, during the time the game was released, cover art wasn't really that accurate.

Take another classic, MegaMan, for example. The artist apparently had never played the game or knew the story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:MegamanBox.jpg

I wish they'd release the NES version on the Wii's Virtual Console. It's never been available in the UK, so I've only ever played the remakes. ):

God this game was made of so much kick assery. For the first half a year I played this though, I didn't know how to "Equip" anything, thus I overleveled like crazy, and got to the Vampire before learning how to equip stuff.

Needless to say, much overdue hilarity soon rampaged across the Four Fiends.
