if you level them up far past what one would need to complete the game with, but who wants to spend that much time leveling them up?

This would be an extremely easy party. I toasted this game, beat warmech in two turns and killed chaos in about 3 rounds with a SOLO BB.

Why on earth would anyone ever want to play with this party? No magic. No gear upgrades. In combat, you just keep pushing attack until the enemies die. Not exactly interesting fantasy gaming in my opinion.
On a purely tactical level, it's obviously pretty effective. The fact that you will never use any gear past elfland means that you will always have tons of money for 99 potions and status curing ailments, and eventually the BBs become tougher than fighters.

I completed it w/this party at L32 as well. It *is* boring tactically, and although you can use the heal items, having to rely on the 99 potion limit is annoying and tedious. Bosses were easy, surviving at the beginning until L10 or so is the only hard part.

After level 10 this party is strong. After level 30 this party is RIDICULOUSLY strong. I have a party of 4 level 50 blackbelts saved on one of my NES cartridges and it is the most powerful party you can possibly have in the game

Ok, BB is the easiset to solo the game w/ (ie, kill off your other 3 chars at lvl 1). Also, BB is good for holding itmes and saving money on gear.
However, BB only realy becomes a power house at the point when you should have beet the game.
So, yes, at 50 this may well be the stronggest party in the game (well, one mage to cast fast might beat it in a single battle, but other than that).
Due to EXTREAM lack of varaity and weekness at the beggining, I would say this is mainly for BB fans or thoes trying to beat the game w/ every set of same chars (ie, all figheters, then all BMs, etc).
Chalenge? Don;t need money, most items, and becomes overpowered w/ over leveling. Yeah, no.

I think the only reason (and the BEST reason) Square included the black belt in the game was to reward thorough, patient gamers with a one-hit end boss kill.

You guys do realize the have the highest magic defense gain per level right(which helps against things like Rub and paralysis before you get the ribbon). It may be true that blackbelts are really strong at level 50, but to be honest at level 21 or whenever they get up to 6 attacks, they hit as hard as a fighter anyway. Level 21 is not that high of a level to beat the game with, and I'll bet it can be done with this party(making it better than anything with a red mage in it since they'll probably face plant to a lich2 Nuke until they reach level 28)

I could see this party being a pain in the ass early on...oh wait it really is. You have to level up big time early on, and if you go up against multiple paralyzing foes, then you're gonna get slapped around pretty good. You'd die off quicker then a Fighter would, but even a Fighter would go down after 235634756356 hits.

The irony of the situation is that NOOB is exactly right.
There's nothing to say after him except for favoritism.
